Oyster-tecture ... You Talkin' To Me!?!

I have to provide yet one more link about oysters, of the gobsmacking irony variety. As several of the last few posts have explained, the Department of the Interior (DOI) has ordered the shut-down of an oyster farm in California, over alleged adverse environmental impacts.

Now, we find an article that describes a plan to use oysters in New York Harbor to improve the environment. Please follow this link to read more. You won't believe it.

All we can say is that Amy Trainer and Ken Salazar better not find out! Or, maybe after the federal government is done beating up the Lunnys and running them off, perhaps the Lunnys can strike it rich as eco-heroes in the Big Apple for doing the very same thing they were condemned in California for. Give me your tired, your poor, your "eco-criminal" oyster farmers yearning to raise delicious locally raised shellfish.
These little town blues are melting away.  I'll make a brand new start of it in old New York.  If I can make it there, I can make it anywhere ...
The folks who support the Drakes Bay Oyster Farm have started a petition to overturn the Salazar decision.  Here is the link. Please consider signing. A "permanent" link has been placed in the blog sidebar too.

  1. Dear Trojan Heron, who is Amy Trainer please? I'm a little curious. It seems like this person's name is connected to our local Friends of the San Juans. And then there is a connection to environmental groups that shut down the 85 year old Drakes Bay Oyster Farm in Point Reyes. So, who is Amy Trainer and how come the name pops up in both places? Thanks for any information you can provide to the public.

  2. Amy Trainer used to be the in-house lawyer for the Friends of the San Juans prior to Kyle Loring. You can find old news reports about her when she was here. Here is one.

After leaving the Friends, she made her way to Marin County, California. She is now the head of the Environmental Action Committee of West Marin. They are the equivalent of the Friends for Marin County. There, Trainer has pursued a line of hardball tactics that are nearly identical to the narrative that we hear coming from the Friends.

We don't know how much contact the two groups have now (Friends and the Marin Environmental Action Committee) but they are saying the same things. I guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

  3. And for additional clarification, the Environmental Action Committee of West Marin (and Amy Trainer specifically) was directly responsible for leading the charge to shut down the oyster farm in Pt. Reyes using trumped up claims of environmental damage and support for bad science.

If the oyster farm was shut down because of anyone (other than Salazar), it was shut down because of her.

  4. There is a petition being passed around asking for a reversal of the Salazar decision. Could the trojan post a link to that? They need a lot of signatures before the end of December.

  6. Thanks for helping readers better understand who Amy Trainer is and her connections to both the FOSJ here and a similar group in Marin County that falsified data in a campaign to shut down a working oyster farm in the Pt. Reyes National Seashore.

Are we in danger? We are close to becoming a new national monument. This is being pushed by Secretary Salazar, the same official who shut down the oyster farm even against the objections of California's Senator Feinstein.

Is there any reason to believe that the FOSJ have the Wescottt Bay Oyster Farm in their cross hairs? What about the Jones Farm?

I think we have a need to know.

  7. I'm from SF. If you want something done, Senator Feinstein is who you want to talk to. An honest reasonable moderate person who does her homework and will take the time to view the video the TH has posted.

Put Salazar in her "crosshairs" and he's toast. The Senator will have huge power in the new term. (She already does have huge power.)

As for Amy Trainer, she needs to be brought down locally much as we are doing with FOSJ. In her case the award winning local Point Reyes Light newspaper, which has always always backed ranchers and farmers will nail little miss Amy.

If you like to write, a message as a person in SJC to the Light editor regarding MS EX FOSJ, it would be a good idea on your part. I'm sure the ranchers and farmers would appreciate some support from a similar community...we are almost identical to Pt. Reyes with the National Parks and, well, etc. (Snuffing rabbits the food source for foxes and raptors. Such a great idea.)

  8. I hail from an old crew of Russian River rats and ruffians from back in the day. Gypsies and poets, writers and workers. They are not pleased, if Facebook threads are any indicators. We are taking professional firefighters, microbrewery managers, folks from old time farm families in the region, all of whom have long connections to Drakes Bay Oyster Farm.

Senator Feinstein's name comes up. Same opinion, solid, moderate, powerful. Apparently she appealed directly to Salazar to NOT shut down the Drakes Bay Oyster Farm so she is already involved.

Salazar did it anyway. I think Feinstein was not pleased.

So what happens now? I agree with the point just made about the Pt. Reyes Light newspaper. I lived in Bolinas many years ago. That is a rural culture that rips our state road signs so they can't be found. Salazar just kicked the hornet's nest, and there are plenty of folks around there who are natural allies with us. We should hook up.

  9. Hello from West Marin! Just found this blog today after a few months of searching. I knew Trainer had to have done this before -even called a close friend in Friday Harbor who must have missed this. She knew nothing. Please send stories. daynurse at gmail dot com. We want to hear. We are sick about how a decent 5th generation family has been treated.
