A BA From Keene State

Yes, the registrar from Keene State has confirmed that the previous information they provided about Lovel Pratt (née Richardson) was erroneous, and she does, in fact, have a BA from Keene State. The comment in the previous blogpost is authentic, and we thank Tom Richard (Keene State Registrar) for clearing up the confusion.

As the Registrar at Keene State College in Keene,NH I am in a position to verify that Lovel Richardson Pratt did in fact earn a Bachelor Of Arts degree on May 12, 1984.

The date of the award preceded our reporting of such data to the National Student Clearinghouse. We also changed our student information system in 1998 so current active records don't include Ms. Pratt's academic history - thus the initial negative response from Ms. Wheeler, a staff assistant in the Registrar's office.

  1. She has a BA but she still hasn't decided what her major is yet.

  2. It is odd that her campaign materials only mention a BA. Normally one would be proud to include English Literature, Political Science or whatever. Independent studies seems a little mushy.

I am a little sad for Lovel though. This little episode just shows how vulnerable she has made us here, with the CAOs

So, the registrar from some old time New England college can't keep correct records and it results in a dustup.

How is that any different from our maps suggesting "possible wetlands" the homeowner is then forced to prove otherwise?

I hope that Lovel will learn from this experience and gain a better understanding of why she lost the race last fall and why the public is not happy with her track record.

  3. I wonder how the next phone call from Keene State College asking for donations at the Pratt household is going to go?

  4. xD

Or did a big donation finally turn up that degree that no one could find until now!

  5. OK, folks, nothing more to see here. Let's move on. Beginning to sound a little like Orly Taitz.

  6. Agreed. Controversy resolved. Good to get it cleared up. We have plenty of real controversies without needing to dwell on a non-controversy.

I appreciate TH putting out the facts, tracking the facts, and correcting the facts. One thing I like about TH is the ability to follow the story as it develops. Real time information and fact checking. Who else would have gotten this messy situation sorted out so quickly. Put it out there, let the facts be known.

    Thanks TH.

  7. So, voting folks with a legitimate interest in candidate backgrounds are "birthers" all of sudden? Hast thou no shame? Surely Pratt's people can do better than that? But, maybe not. Sad.

  8. Thanks for the compliments @8:18, and I agree that the facts speak for themselves. This story is resolved. There are plenty of other stories that are not, so we will go where the real stories are. That's our job (and responsibility).

  9. I believe we all owe Lovell Pratt a sincere apology, it is indeed sad that politics must include, or uncover such hurtful vocation. I am sorry MS Pratt for the obvious hurt and anguish caused by what has herein transpired. Please accept this sincere attempt,, I beg your forgiveness.
Then, also please understand one cause that brings this fiasco to bear.
For years, I for one have come to be aware that Individual Liberty at any expense is no concern of yours. At least none that has shown apparent.
Also for years you have been very forthright in the instigation of acquiring funds in the ways of Grants to further an agenda that supports anything but Private Property Rights, which you don’t seem to realize inherently includes the responsibility to protect and defend.
You have shown a great willingness to impose on people, without regard to the damming effects of your impositions. Both to People, and the Land.
You have taken the stance that individuals are bad and not to be trusted to love respect and defend not only their own lands but the lands of their neighbors in support of their other efforts. It will never be government that protects our lands, “which do very much require protecting”. The regulator acting beyond the most essential need of us all only brings the reverse of protection and to our community.
The fact is our communities have been developed “i.e. Property has been divided and roads and driveways installed “ by humans they must also be continued to be maintained and corrected and worked and loved. When we allow erroneous (that which is Not founded upon complete and locally biased fact)and arbitrary regulatory “propaganda” to interfere with those needs and the ability of people to act upon the needs of the land,
There is simply nobody left to administer to OUR lands. The ability to act was removed by these ridiculous regulations. People can no longer afford to do the necessary caretaking. People can no longer even afford to pay the salaries of the ridiculous ratio of regulator to citizen either.
Grant funds, we don’t need. At one time we were a community, a community that worked together, and helped each other in times of need. Not because it was damanded by our government, but because we were an "Island family"
Today we have Islanders against islanders, neighbors against neighbors all brought on by an unnecessary restructure of authority away from the good people and into the throws of special interest and an authoritarian based regulatory staff and ill-conceived arbitrary regulations.
We really have no choice but to do whatever it takes to defeat what it is that brings your ideas to county government.
I hope you understand, but it really isn’t, never was, personal.
Every person has a right to an opinion, you, me, and everyone else.

  10. "Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. This very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be "cured" against one's will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals."
    -CS Lewis

  11. Was that an insult to domestic animals?

  12. “Never try to teach a pig to sing; it wastes your time and it annoys the pig.”

    Robert Heinlein

  13. Agree it is cold coffee...still a few things: Keene New Hampshire is a small town (23,354 in 2011) of which the Keene college makes up a large part of the population (5,600). Profiled as a liberal arts school the acceptance rate for applicants is over 75%.

Well so what? This school is just a bit NE of Boston and as we all know this area is saturated with with the most famous schools of the Atlantic Seaboard.

Maybe Keene College is an excellent school or maybe it is just the cheapest place to get a BA, nothing wrong with that.

No need for Lovel to parade her Keene College BA degree until she got next to the intellectual Byers.

  14. Diploma conversation is dead. Move on, we have far more important issues to deal with.

I'll try to get it started:

How much money is the current council spending on the "community conversation"?

Is this the right time to be doing this, when the community is at the height of an election and quite possibly stretched for time just trying to attend voters forums?

Wouldn't it make sense to have community forums at a time when the +/- 50% of the island that is gone in the winter is back and can contribute?

  15. People are lead to believe grants the county get are free money. But we have to come up with a percentage of it. They apply for grants and if they get one they take it, wheter it is for something we need or not. If the county is so broke, why spend money we don't have on things we don't need. On Orcas they got a grant to widen one mile of Mt. Baker Rd. several years ago. That has turned into the the county "creating" wetlands on land bank property that they say will have to be monitered for years to track how it's doing. Last I heard the county had spent almost all the grant and county money on consultants and such. How do we find out how much has been spent. They have not even started on the actual road.

  16. The county council could put a moratorium on land trust deals to keep property tax revenue from leaking away until the county budget stabilizes.

  17. The entire property tax discussion - in terms of what should and should not be taxed is going to have to happen at the state level.

If you really want to know who the biggest beneficiaries are of the property tax breaks, you are going to have to start chasing the churches, the private schools (at least those that are 501 c3's) the theaters and entertainment centers, every non-profit child care center, and pretty much every charitable organization in the islands! Unless you can get the state constitution changed, going after any one group with targeted legislation is unconstitutional - unless you can get their 501c3 status delisted... which is a HUGE task!

  18. Didn't we just pass a tax increase for "Public Safety"?

So...two nights ago...driving down Spring St. in FH...three police cars in less than three blocks sitting there waiting....waiting...

Unfortunately I don't feel safer..I feel ... nervous! (am I driving too fast? Are my lights all working? Are my tabs up to date? Did I stop comPLETely at that stopsign?...etc...) I felt so much safer when Bill Cumming was sheriff. Just...sad. And...our tax dollars at..WORK.

  19. Well maybe if we repealed the open space tax breaks for resource protection, I mean now that we have so many other means to protect resources such as critical area ordinances why not collect taxes on an equal basis after all.
